Wayne Coe © 2006

For TALL IN THE SADDLE my client asked for ”a 1930’s ‘hand-painted’ poster look”.  The approved reference photo of Wayne was from 10 years later, THE SEARCHERS!  Everything in shadow was black, zero info.  No one could find reference of Wayne from that period or angle.  I grabbed VHS still frames from TALL IN THE SADDLE and reconstructed the black shadow regions with a younger Wayne’s face.

Universal’s V.P. of marketing once told me I was the only illustrator he’d met who could take a actor’s portrait and turn their head any direction and maintain a likeness.  Maybe it’s inhereted 3D reasoning from my mathematician father.
